About The Position

As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, the Marian University Center for Vibrant Schools is seeking a Literacy Specialist. The Literacy Specialist will promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by working closely with the Executive Director of the Literacy Institute to develop and implement structured literacy programs aligned with scientifically based reading research, and to plan and lead professional development and training for teachers in effective literacy instruction. The Literacy Specialist will be committed to learning the most up-to-date research in effective structured literacy instruction. The Literacy Specialist will ensure teachers and school personnel receive high-quality literacy programming. This role will oversee implementation of current programming and provide planning, development, and implementation of new programming.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required
• Trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading
• Experience with training and coaching teachers in evidence-based practices rooted in the science of reading.
• Coordinated professional learning initiatives in a school and/or district setting.
• Demonstrated ability in working collaboratively with diverse constituencies including classroom teachers, principals, district administrators, support specialists, community, professional associations, and Indiana Department of Education
• Knowledge of adult learning theory.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
• Strong technical/computer skills, good analytical skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of Marian University

• Shows courtesy and respect in interactions with fellow employees, students subordinates, and supervisors
• Ensures that appropriate confidentiality is maintained in working with students.
• Adhere to all FERPA, University regulations, and HIPPA guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
• Design and implement high quality and impactful district/school-based literacy programming for Pre-K-12 educators to build capacity and collective efficacy toward higher levels of achievement for all students.
• Provide leadership, coordination, expertise, support, and analysis of the very best evidence-based initiatives available to assist schools and districts in literacy education.
• Keep up-to-date on national trends in literacy and student learning options, including structured literacy instruction.
• Plan and conduct professional interventions with schools and districts designed to embed highly effective literacy instruction.
• Remain committed to learning new strategies for coaching, teaching, and learning.
• Seek out constructive feedback that helps improve practice.
• Support Literacy Institute colleagues through forming professional relationships.
• Maintain accurate reporting of mileage, using the approved forms and systems.
• Manage absence from work in responsible manner to ensure service to clients, work teams, and coworkers.
• Comply with Marian University policies and practices and seeking clarification of them when necessary.
