Linux Systems Administrator (12 month contract)
About The Position
Cybera is seeking a purpose-driven Linux Systems Administrator to manage a unique hybrid environment, ranging from bare-metal OpenStack clusters to advanced public cloud integrations. This role involves building the digital backbone for Alberta’s researchers, educators, and innovators. Cybera is a not-for-profit agency focused on improving the lives of Albertans through digital technologies, serving education, enterprise, research, and government sectors. They have recently established a regional Security Operations Centre (rSOC) to monitor and respond to cybersecurity threats targeting Alberta’s post-secondary institutions.
Requirements
- Solid Linux knowledge (kernel and shell proficiency).
- Comfort with virtualization/containers.
- A "tinkerer" mindset for hardware troubleshooting.
- Strong grasp of monitoring and alerting philosophy.
- Understanding of how to gain visibility into complex systems using metrics, logs, and traces (tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Clickhouse and Zabbix).
- Experience with managing diverse compute environments.
- Comfort navigating the nuances of private cloud orchestration (OpenStack) alongside public cloud providers (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- An interest in building robust pipelines for system data.
- Understanding of how to ingest, transform, and route high-volume logs and event streams (leveraging technologies like Vector, FluentD, or Kafka).
Responsibilities
- Deploying and managing systems that underpin Alberta’s research and education community, including public clouds, regional security tools, and collaborative data environments.
- Managing the full hardware-to-software lifecycle, from physical hardware maintenance to scaling environments via Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
- Collaborating on best practices for Kubernetes, Prometheus monitoring, and automated configuration management (Ansible/Puppet).
- Providing technical "Tier 3" style support for member organizations in the public and education sectors, helping them integrate their systems with public cloud and logging tools.
- Participating in a compensated on-call rotation for applicable projects.
