About The Position

Etherstack is seeking a Linux Infrastructure Engineer to support deployment and go-live of its emergency communications hardware and applications. The role is part of a 24/7/365 operations team and provides Tier 3 network and IT administration support for Emergency Communication Service (ECS). It is incident-command focused, with responsibility for owning production incidents from initial detection through service restoration and follow-up. The position initially emphasizes responsiveness to go-live activity, with duties potentially changing as operational needs evolve. The engineer will optimize, implement, and maintain network operations across Etherstack’s global offices and cloud deployments, using a DevOps mindset to automate workflows, manage infrastructure as code, and establish repeatable, resilient processes. The role includes maintaining documentation of IT policies, procedures, hardware, and software, as well as designing, deploying, patching, hardening, monitoring, and improving Linux, networking, clustering, and cloud infrastructure. This is a contract-to-hire role based in Irving, Texas. It is described as fully onsite; the posting also says the schedule may eventually move to a hybrid arrangement after approximately six months onsite, with three days in the office and two days remote. The role supports the North American day shift within a 24/7 NOC and includes an on-call rotation. International travel may be possible after conversion to permanent employment but is not mandatory.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science, telecommunications, or a related field, or relevant years of experience in place of the degree.
  • Strong hands-on experience administering and troubleshooting production Linux environments, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
  • Ability to diagnose Linux services, processes, CPU and memory, storage and filesystems, networking, security, performance, and application-connectivity issues from the command line.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, and switching, with hands-on experience troubleshooting VLANs, routing protocols, firewalls, NAT, VPNs, TCP/UDP connectivity, packet loss, latency, and routing problems.
  • Experience supporting and troubleshooting highly available or clustered production systems, including quorum, failover, node communication, fencing, replication, synchronization, and recovery.
  • Ability to investigate complex problems across technology layers using Linux diagnostic tools, logs, monitoring systems, routing information, and packet captures.
  • Ability to methodically isolate whether an issue originates in the operating system, network, database, cluster, application, or an external dependency.
  • Experience with production operations.
  • Willingness to work onsite initially and support the North American day shift in a 24/7 NOC environment.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation.

Nice To Haves

  • Juniper JNCIP certification in Routing and Switching and Network Security; the posting says this is desired but not mandatory and recognizes experience with other manufacturers.
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) and Red Hat Certified Specialist in Security certifications; certifications are desired but not mandatory.
  • Experience with Juniper and/or Cisco infrastructure.
  • Experience with Pacemaker/Corosync and Galera Cluster.
  • Cloud certifications.
  • Cybersecurity certifications.
  • International travel availability after conversion to permanent employment.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the first technical point of response and primary customer technical contact during production incidents, owning investigation through service restoration and follow-up.
  • Troubleshoot the full service environment, including Linux systems, IP networks, firewalls, Pacemaker/Corosync clusters, Galera database clusters, virtualization, applications, and customer connectivity.
  • Diagnose complex Linux and network issues using command-line tools, logs, monitoring data, routing information, and packet captures with tcpdump and Wireshark.
  • Troubleshoot routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, TCP/UDP, performance, and connectivity issues, including packet loss, latency, and asymmetric routing.
  • Troubleshoot high-availability Linux and database environments, including quorum, failover, cluster communication, replication, synchronization, and recovery issues.
  • Coordinate internal engineering teams, customers, network and data-center providers, and other third parties while retaining technical ownership of incidents.
  • Design, deploy, maintain, patch, harden, monitor, and improve Linux, network, clustering, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and execute controlled production changes.
  • Maintain technical documentation, including IT policies, procedures, hardware, and software documentation.
  • Develop Bash and Python automation to improve operations and troubleshooting.
  • Monitor systems, assess performance, perform upgrades, maintain and create response and troubleshooting SOPs, administer accounts, and test and deploy software.
