Requirements

  • Must have a working understanding of electrical theory and the principals of current voltage, resistance, and transformation.
  • Ability to read orders, plans, and work prints, and understand symbols is required.
  • Ability to rig, operate and use equipment and tools associated with line work, and work with limited supervision is required.
  • Current valid Maine driver’s license is required, and position requires the incumbent to acquire and maintain a valid State of Maine Class A Commercial Driver’s license. CDL learner’s permit must be acquired within the first six months of employment.
  • Participation is required in Controlled Substances and Alcohol Use and Testing Program as prescribed by the US Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Part 382, including pre-employment and random testing.
  • Position requires identity verification and seven-year criminal background check with update at least every seven years pursuant to NERC standards.
  • Satisfactory completion of IBEW Apprenticeship training program or equivalent.
  • Position requires driving, sitting, standing, walking, climbing, bending, carrying materials/equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., pushing, and pulling.
  • Position requires the incumbent to drive a commercial vehicle and perform pole top maintenance of transmission and distribution lines and transformers.
  • This position requires hearing and the ability to communicate immediately and effectively due to safety requirements when working in substations and the potential for significant risk of substantial harm to him/herself or others.
  • This position requires vision, and the ability to discern colors (red, green, yellow, blue, and white) and depth perception due to safety requirements when working in substations and the potential for significant risk of substantial harm to him/herself or others.
  • Position requires extended periods of time in severe weather conditions during outages and other operational initiatives. The incumbent may be exposed to cold, heat, dampness, heights, skin and lung irritants.
  • Position requires mechanical aptitude and manual and finger dexterity.
  • Position requires ability to work closely with crew members, and with the public.
  • Position requires ability to work effectively and safely under pressure and in stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions.
  • Ability to read orders, plans, and work prints, and understand symbols.
  • Ability to rig, operate and use equipment and tools associated with line work, and work with limited supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Provided Call Duty qualifications can be attained within a six-month period, job classifications below Line Worker 1st Class will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Performs the duties of the lower rated jobs in the Line Worker job progression.
  • Understands and is familiar with all circuits common to the transmission and distribution system.
  • Recognizes dangers inherent in the position. Works in accordance with all established safety rules and regulations, including the use of required personal protective equipment. Attends and actively participates in scheduled safety meetings and training programs.
  • Performs with rubber protective equipment on voltages up to and including 15 KV.
  • Performs work with live line equipment on voltages up to and including 46 KV. as necessary, may do trimming.
  • Operates trucks, vehicles and other equipment, as required.
  • Instructs and directs workers in the lower line department job classifications, as required.
  • Accurately prepares records of all time worked and materials used at the job site.
  • May act as Lead Worker during periods of temporary assignments or during the temporary absence of a rated Lead Worker.
  • Must be qualified to perform work assignments made within the administration of the Workforce Flexibility.
  • Position will spend up to 90% of his/her time in field operations (at pole construction sites, performing wire maintenance, etc.).
  • Works closely and cooperatively with other crew members.
  • Works in accordance with the documented environmental procedures, instructions, and specific responsibilities as defined in individual procedures and instructions. Reports problems or deviations associated with environmental issues and the Environmental Management System (EMS) to the Environmental Department.
  • Other related duties as assigned, including designated duties associated with System Restoration. This includes the workforce flexibility model requirements as agreed upon with the Collective Bargaining representative.
