About The Position

The Structural Engineering Line Supervisor for the Division Managed Design organization provides leadership, technical direction, and oversight to Design Engineers. Responsibilities include maintaining safe working conditions and safety awareness, flow down of goals, performance reviews, time card approvals, setting priorities/expectations and integrating work within the supervised organization. Additionally, will monitor department workload and ensure the performance of the organization’s execution of established scope, budget and schedule for projects under purview. Advises management of staffing needs necessary to address both forecasted and emerging workload, and assists in providing both long- and short- term direction for the team. Leads Engineers in technical matters including data analysis, and SME review. The candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to energize, organize, and lead groups of engineering personnel. Develops and maintains qualified technical resources to execute projects in support of the Y-12 mission. Provides technical oversight as staff perform difficult and complex technical assignments. Acts as a leader, advisor, or consultant for staff. Recommends improvements in guiding documentation, technology utilization and automation, and analyzes the impact of mission changes on design or engineering concepts of assigned programs. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for developing high quality detailed design packages, providing engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs, and providing expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant facilities. Design involves the preparation of conceptual engineering deliverables such as cost-estimating bills of material and man-hour estimates, statements of work, design criteria, and design engineering deliverables. Candidate must effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team, or as a technical lead for a multi-discipline task and will routinely provide input to system engineers and other plant customers. Design engineer will routinely perform walkdowns in the existing plant facilities in order to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel. This position will require technical expertise and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field of Structural Engineering. The structural engineer will provide self-performed technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems through the application of established engineering practices, codes and standards. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to building evaluations and modifications, seismic analyses and rehab, oversight of outside engineering firms, and machine installations. The structural engineer must be proficient with developing structural drawings (plans, sections and details) for various materials of construction (concrete, steel, masonry, cold-formed steel, timber), structural calculations, equipment anchorage, report preparation, drafting (or oversight of drafting), and preparation of construction specifications (generally in the form of general notes on the drawings). Must be familiar with consensus design codes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science [Chemistry, Physics, or related] from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET
  • 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to energize, organize, and lead groups of engineering personnel.
  • Technical expertise and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field of Structural Engineering.
  • Proficient with developing structural drawings (plans, sections and details) for various materials of construction (concrete, steel, masonry, cold-formed steel, timber), structural calculations, equipment anchorage, report preparation, drafting (or oversight of drafting), and preparation of construction specifications (generally in the form of general notes on the drawings).
  • Must be familiar with consensus design codes.
  • Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is a requirement for security clearance applicants.
