The Limited Practitioner position bridges the period between law school graduation and becoming sworn in and licensed by a state bar. It allows the Law Offices of the Public Defender (LOPD) to extend offers to applicants before graduation, providing a prospective employee with an employment commitment after graduation and the LOPD with a candidate dedicated to indigent defense. Successful applicants are expected to join the LOPD soon after taking the bar exam for extensive training in criminal defense, local rules and practices, and the LOPD’s approach to holistic representation. After being sworn in and demonstrating the expected level of practice, Limited Practitioners may move into a Public Defender Attorney position, depending on demonstrated performance and position availability. The position is intended for LOPD offices throughout the state. Limited Practitioners are paid $31.98 per hour, or $66,518.40 annually as a base salary. The typical starting salary for a Public Defender 2 position is $37.7415 per hour, or $78,502.32 annually as a base salary. This position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement and is classified as non-exempt under the FLSA. The LOPD is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Preference may be given to multilingual applicants fluent in English and other languages. Applicants must submit a full application, including a current resume, cover letter, and current transcripts. Applicants are asked to identify and rank the LOPD locations or offices where they are considering employment.
