About The Position

This position involves hanging, circuiting, and focusing lighting instruments, and setting up sound equipment and visual media for all UWS Theatre productions. The role also includes maintaining the organization and safety of the control booth and storage areas for lighting, sound, and visual media equipment. Additionally, the crew member may operate lighting and sound boards for non-UWS Theatre events. Training is provided for all areas. Student employees will work with and repair various stage lighting and sound equipment, climb ladders, and work in catwalks above the theatre. The average work week is 10 hours, but this can vary based on student availability. Holidays and college breaks are unscheduled, and theatre shops and the box office are closed during these times. Some weekend work is scheduled for the season, typically one Saturday and Sunday per production, for completing technical needs and partially dismantling the production. UWS Theatre performances run Thursday-Sunday for two weekends, with four shows annually (two main stage and two alternative productions per semester). Specific performance and work dates are scheduled in advance and posted on the UWS Theatre Student Employee Canvas portal.

Requirements

  • Enthusiasm and a desire to work in technical theatre.
  • Must be able to work at the minimum, 5 hours a week.
  • Must qualify for federal work study.
  • Must be a current or incoming UWS student.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to work on ladders and powered lift at heights up to 10 feet or higher.
  • Work well unsupervised.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous high school, college, or community theatre experience.
  • Experience or interest in operating light and sound control boards, repairing lighting and sound equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of electricity.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Lighting and Sound Designer in completing the placement, hang, circuiting, and focusing of lighting, sound and visual media equipment for all UWS Theatre productions when needed.
  • Maintain the organization and safety of the control booth, lighting, sound and visual media equipment storage as well as the performance spaces.
  • Assist the scene shop crew in building and painting scenery, furniture, and hang masking curtains for all UWS Theatre productions when needed.
  • Maintain the organization and safety of the scene shop and performance stage.
  • Assist with the general organization, maintenance and inventory control of all shops, supplies, and equipment: makeup, sewing notions, electronics, hardware, power tools, paint, etc.
  • Assist with the requests to borrow or rent equipment, props, costumes, etc.
  • Assist with Box Office duties and ushering during performances.
  • Assist the Costume Shop.
  • Attend scheduled UWS Theatre student employee meetings, work Saturdays, and Sundays dismantling the set.
