Lifeguards monitor activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents and provides assistance to swimmers. Guest safety is the most important concern of the lifeguard. All lifeguards should do everything possible to maintain an accident-free environment by watching for potential problems proactively. Every lifeguard has the responsibility of covering their assigned zone using the 10/20 scanning rule. This means that the lifeguard has 10 seconds to recognize a problem within their zone and 20 seconds to respond to and reach that problem. The role involves monitoring and maintaining control over queue areas and slide towers, ensuring the waterpark is clean and free from trash, and performing daily opening and closing duties as assigned. Lifeguards supervise and provide surveillance of swimmers and guests during park hours and special events, enforce rules and regulations, and render appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary. They advise aquatics management of unsafe and unsanitary conditions, possess a general knowledge of the activity pools and flume attractions, and assist guests in a polite and expedient manner. Daily routine chores and maintenance of the waterpark are performed to ensure a neat and orderly appearance. Lifeguards handle and communicate with guests on a one-on-one basis in a professional, courteous manner, and maintain a businesslike atmosphere and a clean, neat appearance with professional conduct at all times.
