About The Position

This position is responsible for ensuring the safety of all individuals within the Aquatic Center. Work is performed under the general direction of the Recreation Specialist. The following at-will job posting will remain open until all positions are filled. Morning, evening, weekday, and weekend shifts are available. Minimum requirement of 10 hours per week. All staff members actively participate in monthly in-service training to help ensure their skills are at the highest level.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must possess a current certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Standard First Aid from a nationally recognized organization (Jeff Ellis and Associates certification is preferred) or must be enrolled in and attending a certified Lifeguard Training Program.
  • If certified through another nationally recognized agency, certification through Jeff Ellis & Associates is mandatory within 60 days of hire.
  • Must pass pre-employment water, CPR, and first aid exams.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to chemicals commonly used in swimming pool environments.
  • Ability to clearly communicate procedures, problems and policies with fellow employees and the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Must be willing to conform to department uniform policy.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and distress situations quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends and holidays and substitute when needed.
  • This is an "At-Will" position: Work assignments and hours are scheduled based on availability, division requirements and within the confines of the budget. Schedules and work hours are not guaranteed and are subject to change at any time due to division needs, budgeting constraints and staff availability.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes a positive and safe experience for all visiting patrons.
  • Observes the behavior of all patrons either by patrolling the deck or by surveying from the lifeguard chair, as directed.
  • Communicates facility's policies, rules, and procedures in a friendly and pleasant manner.
  • Provides updates to people within the pool area as needed.
  • Keeps an accurate record of individuals using the facility.
  • Performs assists, rescues, and administers CPR and first aid when necessary.
  • Records pool and air temperatures as well as chemical readings as required by Health Department guidelines.
  • Alerts supervisory staff to any dangerous, unsanitary or potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Assists swim instructors with record keeping, equipment usage, and swim lessons.
  • Regulates the dispatch of people using the water slide and monitors the flow of swimmers and equipment in the other pool areas.
  • Attends and participates in meetings, retraining and staff in-services as required.
  • Performs minor maintenance, cleaning and daily upkeep of the Aquatic Center.
  • Responds to patron concerns or complaints and forwards information to appropriate supervisor.
  • Provides a dependable and acceptable substitute in their absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
