About The Position

Protect lives, promote water safety, and create a positive experience for all guests at our aquatic facilities. This position performs specialized public safety work focused on the prevention of aquatic emergencies and ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for swimmers and visitors. Responsibilities include monitoring swimming activities, enforcing facility rules and safety regulations, responding quickly and effectively to emergencies, and providing lifesaving assistance to individuals in distress. In addition to safeguarding patrons, this role supports the overall operation and appearance of pool and beach facilities by maintaining water quality standards and ensuring surrounding areas remain clean, organized, and guest ready. Employees receive hands-on training and guidance from supervisors, then are expected to independently carry out daily assignments while following established procedures, safety protocols, and operational standards with professionalism and minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Six months of experience in lifeguarding or aquatic instruction field
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years old
  • Must possess and maintain CPR/AED certification for Professional Rescuers
  • Must possess and maintain Standard First Aid certification
  • Must possess and maintain American Red Cross Lifeguard or nationally recognized equivalent certification
  • Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications
  • Knowledge of local and State water safety rules and regulations, and pertinent rules, regulations, and County ordinances
  • Knowledge of rescue methods and first aid as applies to accidents in the water and surrounding areas, including CPR and Auto External Defibrillator and oxygen administration
  • Knowledge of common swimming pool chemicals including water quality testing reagents
  • Skill in swimming, water rescues, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and first aid
  • Ability to be proactive in regard to safety precautions, to recognize emergencies, and to take appropriate action
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations
  • Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems
  • Ability to prepare effective correspondence on routine matters and to perform routine administrative functions without referral to supervisor
  • Ability to handle distressed swimmers and patrons in a professional manner
  • Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing, in English
  • Ability to maintain good physical condition and sufficient strength to control struggling adult swimmers
  • Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work
  • Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes
  • Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, service providers, other employees, and the general public

Nice To Haves

  • Within six (6) months of position assignment: Must obtain and maintain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification
