The Lifeguard is responsible for the overall safety of the participants who utilize the pool and surrounding area. This role involves maintaining a neat and clean pool area, consistently demonstrating excellent customer service with a friendly disposition, and being knowledgeable and helpful with all information provided. The Lifeguard responds to patron concerns in a timely and appropriate manner, reports all incidents and concerns to the Aquatics Director or Associate Director, and attends staff meetings and trainings as deemed necessary. They must follow all policies and procedures listed in the Employee Handbook, Aquatics Procedural Handbook, and Pool Operator Handbook. If certified, the Lifeguard ensures compliance of the facility and staff with all related Health Department and Y-USA regulations during their shift, functions as the primary point of contact for aquatics related customer service issues in the absence of higher level staff, tests and records conditions of pool water and takes action to correct improperly balanced water, advises the Aquatics Director or designee of action taken, maintains knowledge of the pump room, and performs maintenance duties when assigned. The Lifeguard monitors and watches the pools during all aquatic activities following established YMCA procedures, is familiar with and prepared to use the Emergency Procedures when an emergency occurs at the pool, maintains lifeguard safety equipment on person at all times while on active surveillance duty, and performs rescue measures and appropriate care when required.
