About The Position

Monitors activities and performs services at the pool area to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers and customers. Provides a high level of customer service while ensuring a safe, welcoming, and fun environment. Essential functions include ensuring guest safety by overseeing assigned areas, protecting weak or distressed swimmers, effectively communicating and maintaining safety standards, enforcing all aquatics rules, providing exemplary customer service, cautioning swimmers regarding unsafe use of the pool, actively monitoring for swimmers in distress, assisting and/or rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning and administering first aid and CPR. The role also involves maintaining order in the swimming area, inserting and removing lane lines, responding quickly and decisively to emergencies, assisting with tasks like guest check-in, cleaning and lifting objects. Daily maintenance functions include cleaning restrooms, grounds, and building. The lifeguard determines chlorine content and pH value of water with a testing kit and logs information, immediately reporting unsafe equipment, facility, or chemical issues to management. Participation in required in-service trainings and other meetings is expected, and the role contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned. Employees may be required to work during emergencies to provide for public safety and vital services.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of public recreation, and aquatic programs.
  • Knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies, and operating procedures of City Aquatics programs.
  • Knowledge of swimming pool safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of swimming pool maintenance, operations, and safety rules and regulations.
  • Skill in promoting a positive recreation environment and good personal behavior.
  • Skill in monitoring pool facility and guests for violations of rules and safety standards.
  • Skill in promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
  • Skill in acting quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Skill in interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and general public.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Minimum age for consideration is 16 years of age.
  • Must successfully complete a swim-test.
  • Must obtain lifeguard certifications.
  • Required to maintain established performance levels.
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or equivalent (Within 2 weeks of hire date).
  • Current Red Cross CPR Certification or equivalent (Within 2 weeks of hire date).
  • Current Red Cross Standard First Aid Certification or equivalent (Within 2 weeks of hire date).

Responsibilities

  • Respond quickly, intelligently, decisively and in accordance with established emergency action plan.
  • Assists with various assigned tasks such as guest check-in, cleaning and lifting objects.
  • Performs daily maintenance functions of cleaning restrooms, grounds, and building, etc.
  • Determines chlorine content and pH value of water with water testing kit and logs information appropriately.
  • Immediately reports unsafe equipment, facility, chemical, etc. issues to management.
  • Participates in required in-service trainings and other meetings.
  • Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • May at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.
