About The Position

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining the highest level of safety and swimming conditions for all patrons in the pool, on the deck, and surrounding areas. This involves preventing accidents and responding to emergencies quickly and efficiently. The Lifeguard is also responsible for building positive relationships with members, ensuring member satisfaction, and contributing to retention. The role requires adherence to YMCA policies and guidelines, performing water testing, reporting concerns, treating minor accidents, and maintaining professional relationships with members and staff. Continuous certification and CPR are mandatory, along with attending required meetings and training. The Lifeguard must identify and report potential health and safety threats, utilize preventive lifeguarding techniques, and enforce YMCA rules. Additionally, the role involves assisting with schedules, substituting, and conveying program information to members. Other duties may be assigned based on family center needs.

Requirements

  • Pursuing High School diploma or GED.
  • YMCA Lifeguard Certified or Red Cross Lifeguard Certified.
  • First Aid/CPR/ AED CPRO and oxygen administration certified or within 30 days of first shift.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to interact with individuals at all levels.
  • Must be organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults including program participants, parents, volunteers, staff, and representatives of contract pool sites.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Must wear branch-provided YMCA lifeguard shirt.
  • Ability to lift / move set up and store equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to demonstrate the specific skills to show technical proficiency in lifeguarding rescue techniques.
  • Must be able to swim 500 yards/meters non-stop and tread water for two minutes without using hands.
  • Must be able to hear without aid, and see victims.
  • Satisfactorily clear a thorough Level II fingerprint background screening.
  • Successfully complete a drug test.

  • Bilingual, English and Spanish, a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining the highest level of safety and swimming conditions for all patrons.
  • Preventing accidents and responding to emergencies quickly and efficiently.
  • Building positive relationships with members, ensuring member satisfaction and retention.
  • Arriving at least 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the work shift.
  • Ensuring necessary lifeguard equipment is on deck during work time and put away when not on duty.
  • Supervising all YMCA recreational swimming and/or swim lessons in accordance with YMCA policies and guidelines.
  • Performing regular water testing and maintaining proper chemistry as scheduled.
  • Reporting any concerns to the facility manager.
  • Treating minor accidents as necessary and taking appropriate actions for all incidents/accidents, following up with proper YMCA incident/accident forms.
  • Developing and maintaining professional and courteous relations with parents, program participants, and pool site management staff.
  • Maintaining current certification and CPR.
  • Attending meetings and/or professional training as required or requested by Aquatics Director.
  • Bringing to the Aquatic Director's attention any condition or practice which may be considered a threat to the health and safety of members and guests.
  • Using preventive lifeguarding techniques to minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.
  • Applying rules and policies of the YMCA Lifeguard Manual.
  • Assisting in creating schedules and emergency substituting.
  • Conveying information on programs and schedules to members.
  • Performing other duties as assigned based on family center requirements or needs.
