About The Position

The Lifeguard supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This position creates a safe, welcoming, and positive environment for everyone using our aquatic facilities. Lifeguards are responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and throughout the surrounding aquatic areas in accordance with Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Must hold a current YMCA Lifeguard certification or an approved equivalent certification.
  • Must hold current Professional Rescuer CPR, AED, Oxygen Administration, and First Aid certifications.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguarding skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Must maintain the physical and mental readiness required for certification.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively and professionally in a team environment.
  • Must be able to relate effectively to individuals from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
  • Must complete Child Abuse Prevention, Understanding Your Biases, Anti-Harassment, Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard Communication Awareness, and Slips, Trips, and Falls training within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain active and consistent surveillance of the assigned pool area.
  • Know and regularly review the Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA Aquatics Safety Plan and emergency procedures.
  • Respond immediately and appropriately to emergencies in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “Safe-in-Six” response model.
  • Complete all required incident and emergency reports accurately and promptly.
  • Know, understand, and consistently enforce safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and surrounding aquatic areas.
  • Remain calm, professional, and objective when under pressure or challenged by others.
  • Maintain order and address concerns with timely, appropriate solutions.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and applicable state health department regulations.
  • Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate safety and rescue equipment is available and ready for use.
  • Inspect the pool and surrounding areas for hazardous conditions upon arrival and ensure the facility is properly secured at closing.
  • Perform required chemical testing while not actively guarding and take appropriate action when necessary.
  • Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of the pool, deck, and surrounding areas.
  • Follow all YMCA policies and procedures while demonstrating the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
