About The Position

The Lifeguard supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This part-time position supports the Aquatics team by providing a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas. Requirements

  • Minimum age of 15 years.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, including CPR Pro and First Aid.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to pass the basic lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to remain calm during high-stress situations. Must be able to speak clearly when talking with emergency response personnel.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision and maintain YMCA standards.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Complete all new employee orientation training within 45 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains active surveillance of the pool area. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action. Checks and records water temperature.
  • Provides swim tests to members.
  • Attend monthly in-services.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Give schedule availability up to 6 months in advance notice for time off requests for each new scheduling period.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations. Obtain and maintain required training(s).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of American red cross training materials and can perform rescues to American red cross standards.
  • Retains knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for medical or traumatic emergencies until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
