About The Position

Maple Grove is a forward thinking, thriving community in the northwest suburbs of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The City of Maple Grove is proud to employ over 250 benefit-earning employees, 500+ part-time, casual, temporary, seasonal employees, and 100 paid-on-call firefighters to staff our many departments. We provide public safety, public works, community and economic development, parks & recreation and many other important public services to a growing community. The position of Pool Lifeguard is responsible to maintain a safe swimming environment for Maple Grove's Community Center pools, and swimming beaches. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor, Coordinator, and Head Lifeguard. Lifeguards may qualify for this position by having their current certifications or for those not already certified, the City will provide the certification training at no cost to the employee. Employees who receive paid certification training are expected to work through the current season and may be required to reimburse the costs of the training if that requirement is not met.

Requirements

  • Must be 15 years of age or older.
  • Must possess current Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid Certification, or have the ability to successfully complete the above certification course.
  • Must be able to perform Lifeguard Training pre-course skill requirements at regularly scheduled in-service training.
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs.
  • Proficient swimmer.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Lifeguard Training Instructor certificate
  • Advanced First Aid Training such as First Responder or Emergency Medical Technician
  • Previous lifeguard experience

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe environment for all patrons and staff.
  • Familiarization of the pool layout and location of all safety equipment.
  • Know the rules of the pool, enforce rules at all times.
  • Use voice and whistle commands to provide simple and concise directions to maintain order on the deck and in the pool at all times.
  • Administer first aid and complete necessary paperwork for any incident.
  • Know the established emergency procedures and respond efficiently in an emergency situation.
  • Report for duty in proper uniform.
  • Interact professionally and courteous with employees and the public.
  • Stay at assigned station, maintaining steadfast alertness while guarding.
  • Observe participants in the pool area, requiring close supervision, distant supervision, utilizing peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Report any missing safety equipment or replacement equipment needed to supervisor.
  • Participate in staff training as requested.
  • Ability to make quickly make sound decisions using judgment and problem solving skills.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by supervisor.
