About The Position

A YMCA Lifeguard ensures the safety of all patrons in and around the aquatic area by preventing accidents, actively scanning the water, and responding quickly to emergencies. This role requires maintaining peak physical and mental readiness, enforcing facility rules, and delivering exceptional member service.

Requirements

  • Minimum age - 15 years old.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard (or equivalent American Red Cross) certification, plus current CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
  • Ability to pass a rigorous Lifeguard Skills Test (endurance swim, timed object retrieval), and the physical mobility to climb ladders and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Complete required child abuse prevention training and maintain a strict adherence to youth protection policies.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain constant, vigilant supervision of the assigned zone to prevent accidents and identify distress signals immediately.
  • Execute rapid rescue techniques and provide first aid, CPR, AED, and emergency oxygen in accordance with YMCA of the USA standards.
  • Enforce all pool policies, guidelines, and safety regulations fairly and consistently among diverse groups of members.
  • Perform routine chemical testing (e.g., chlorine, pH), equipment checks, and clean the pool deck, office, and surrounding spaces.
  • Prevent reckless behavior, clear the pool when hazardous conditions arise, and conduct regular safety audits.
