About The Position

This is a part-time position responsible for the constant observance of various age groups swimming in the pool, controlling the public's use of pool facilities, and administering lifesaving techniques and first aid in case of accidents or emergencies. The role also involves keeping restrooms and the pool area clean according to health regulations and helping to organize and conduct “Learn to swim classes.” The position requires adherence to the City of Brownwood “I SERVE” Core Values.

Requirements

  • Must have enough education to at least read, write and effectively communicate.
  • Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid Certification required.
  • Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification required.
  • WSI (Water Safety Instructor) Certification required.
  • Knowledge of lifesaving techniques.
  • Ability and skills in swimming.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid procedures.
  • Knowledge of handling chemicals for swimming pools.
  • Good communication skills, tactfulness, and discretion with other lifeguards and general public required.
  • Ability to sit and stand.
  • Ability to lift materials weighing up to 30 pounds frequently and 50-100 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to drag up to 80 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, walk, push brooms and sweep.
  • Ability to operate a lawn mower and weed-eater.
  • Ability to walk over sloped and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to communicate in writing and verbally with the public.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written communication.

Nice To Haves

  • A current driver license is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Constantly observe participants in the pool.
  • Ensure water safety and enforce all safety rules in and out of the water.
  • Keep all areas of the pool and restroom areas clean.
  • Administer first aid and respond immediately to calls for assistance in case of accidents or emergencies in and around the pool area and the premises.
  • Take regular interval readings of chlorine and PH levels and check necessary equipment for sanitation of pools.
  • Mow, weed-eat, and rake lawn.
  • Attend weekly in-service Lifeguard training.
  • Work with other Water Safety Instructors to organize and conduct “Learn to Swim Classes”.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Head Lifeguard or Recreation Supervisor.
