About The Position

The City of San Ramon is looking for enthusiastic and responsible individuals to join our Aquatics Team as a Lifeguard I! As a Lifeguard, you’ll play an important role in creating a safe, welcoming, and fun aquatic environment for our community. You’ll supervise pool activities, respond to emergencies, assist patrons, and may even have the opportunity to teach swim lessons and lead recreational programs. Under direct or general supervision, Lifeguards help ensure the safety of pool patrons and provide a positive aquatic experience. Lifeguards supervise pool activities and may also teach swim lessons and assist with recreational swim programs. Lifeguards receive direction from supervisors or management staff and do not directly supervise other employees. They may provide training and technical guidance to other staff as needed. Lifeguard I is the entry-level position in the Lifeguard Series within the Parks and Community Services Department. Employees at this level typically have some basic work-related experience and work under general supervision. Lifeguard I employees perform many of the same duties as Lifeguard II employees but are still developing their skills and experience. They generally have less responsibility for making independent decisions about work procedures and methods.

Requirements

  • Must be a minimum of 15 years old.
  • Undergo appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting.
  • Documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years.
  • Current American Red Cross certifications or equivalent in Lifeguard Training First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguards.

Nice To Haves

  • 400 hours of experience as a certified lifeguard
  • 200 hours of experience as a certified lifeguard and an instructor-level certification.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and ensures patron safety at all times, including clearly and professionally conveying rules to patrons and enforcing facility regulations.
  • Administers first aid and provides emergency care as required, maintains a safe aquatic environment and facility.
  • Greets the public, responds to patrons' questions and inquiries.
  • Assists with the Swim Lesson program.
  • Keeps records and reports.
  • Attends mandatory trainings and meetings.
  • Assists senior staff and supervisors as directed.
  • Follows the City and Parks and Community Services Department policies and procedures.
  • Assists with cleaning and routine maintenance of the aquatic facility, including locker rooms, guard office, pool surfaces, and other facility-related duties as assigned.
  • Presents and maintains a professional appearance and demeanor, including wearing appropriate uniform or attire for the position and exhibiting respect and enthusiasm as duties and responsibilities are carried out.
  • Assists and teaches swim lessons.
  • Facilitates recreation activities according to prepared curriculum.
  • Provides feedback regarding program goals, objectives, and activity schedules to the public, participants or supervisors.
  • Provides leadership for staff and volunteers and supervision for participants in program areas.
  • Lifeguards the waterslide.
