About The Position

At Little Friends, we empower individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities to thrive in their community. Our programs and staff provide lifelong opportunities for growth, so the people we serve can work, learn, play, and experience the joy of life’s everyday moments. We're looking for an organized, self-motivated, and enthusiastic Life Skills Trainer to join our team. The ideal candidate can provide direction and supervision to children in all aspects of daily living. A life skills trainer advises and assists the individuals that we care for. They are responsible for helping them learn, adapt, and develop skills such as: doing day-to-day tasks, interacting with other people, caring for themselves, as well as doing basic duties.

Requirements

  • HS diploma/GED required.
  • Minimum age 21.
  • Valid IL driver’s license and auto insurance required.
  • Reliable transportation and good driving record (No more than 2 moving violations in the last 5 years).
  • Must be able to complete background checks and physical.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Must be DSP certified in IL.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's in Psychology, Social Work, or other Human Services fields preferred.
  • Willingness to learn best practices for success when working with children with autism.

Responsibilities

  • Advise and assist the individuals that we care for.
  • Help individuals learn, adapt, and develop skills such as doing day-to-day tasks, interacting with other people, caring for themselves, as well as doing basic duties.
  • Assist in daily living skills, following behavior plans, usage of schedules and other visual communications.
  • Provide training, assistance, and supervision to individuals receiving care in the areas of living skills, therapeutic recreation, and other forms of assistance in both residential and community settings.
  • Assist with daily activities such as meal preparation, personal hygiene, shopping, cleaning, and medication administration.
  • Facilitate working relationships between others and individuals served and support community involvement by accompanying them on outings or providing transportation to work or other activities.
  • Work closely with other team members to support the therapeutic and behavioral plans in place for the individuals we support.
  • Maintain compliance with the certification requirements, background checks, rules, and regulations of the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the Department of Human Services (DHS).
