About The Position

The Life Skills Instructor is responsible for serving individuals in a supportive and guiding role, assisting them in mastering independent living skills. This role implements all Agency policies and procedures pertaining to the safety and welfare of the individuals and acts as a role model by promoting fun, safe, and healthy activities for the individuals. The position requires driving one's own vehicle and maintaining proof of car insurance.

Requirements

  • Minimum possession of a High School Diploma or a G.E.D.
  • Minimum two years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or dual diagnoses (experience may be substituted with education on a year-for-year basis).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to be insured by the agency's insurance company throughout employment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certifications in CPR, First Aid, PMT, and DDS State Medication Administration.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, transfer, and physically intervene with individuals as required.
  • Driving your own vehicle is a requirement of this position.
  • Proof of car insurance is a requirement of this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Individual may be required to travel in the course of their daily work using the Agency vehicle or their own vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor consumer behavior and implement behavior management programs.
  • Document all shift activities, incidents, and consumer progress in Therap.
  • Provide programmatic and statistical reports as required.
  • Maintain the safety, appearance, and cleanliness of the home, including conducting sanitation and safety inspections and making minor repairs.
  • Maintain a professional attitude with colleagues, management, and outside agencies.
  • Ensure consumers' location is known at all times and implement all Agency policies and procedures, including medication administration, key control, IP adherence, evacuation, and emergency procedures.
  • Complete incident reports accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Implement and adhere to all policies, procedures, and commitments required by state and federal agencies.
  • Fulfill delegated responsibilities and report at staff meetings.
  • Act as an advocate and role model for consumers, treating individuals with respect and dignity.
  • Assist consumers with hygiene needs.
  • Provide counseling and reinforcement to assigned individuals regarding progress, problems, and interests.
  • Supervise and safely transport residents to community activities, day programs, jobs, errands, and social events.
  • Follow emergency procedures for fire, hurricanes, power outages, accidents, or other serious incidents.
  • Notify supervisor immediately in all emergency situations.
  • Assist guardians, parents, and others in understanding and implementing normalization/person-centered-planning principles.
  • Assist individuals in mastering independent living skills such as personal management, household management, nutritional awareness, academic skills, money management, human sexuality, safety and health, community participation, social skills, and time management.
  • Assume responsibility for an assigned caseload, including goal work, program planning, and daily/weekly/monthly paperwork.
  • Establish and adhere to a work schedule within approved guidelines.
  • Report and respond to any violation of individuals' rights directly to the Executive Director or designee.
  • Participate in investigations as directed.
  • Attend in-service training, seminars, and other professional development opportunities.
  • Provide training for Agency personnel as required.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings and trainings.
  • Distribute medications according to consumer schedules and guidelines.
  • Assist in shopping, meal preparation, set-up, and clean-up when on duty.
  • Follow Behavior Support Plans and document accordingly.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Individualized Supports Manager or upper management.
