Life Skills Instructor
About The Position
The Carmel program serves 6 adult males, aged 32 to 70. Five individuals are high-functioning and require verbal prompting, while one individual is wheelchair-bound and needs staff assistance with some tasks. The individuals have diverse personalities and various conditions including mild autism, sleep apnea, seizure disorder, OCD, and ADHD. Staff support includes meal preparation, bed making, laundry assistance, personal hygiene (shaving, showering, dressing), and general house cleaning. The individuals enjoy activities such as watching movies, going on outings to restaurants and the mall, arts and crafts, and playing video games. The program is situated in a scenic area of Putnam County, and staff assist individuals in enjoying outdoor activities on two patios, including tending to a vegetable garden during warmer months.
Requirements
- Ability to provide verbal prompting.
- Willingness to assist with personal hygiene tasks.
- Ability to assist with household chores.
- Patience and understanding of individuals with diverse needs and personalities.
Nice To Haves
- Experience working with individuals with autism, seizure disorders, OCD, or ADHD.
- Experience assisting individuals who use wheelchairs.
- Enjoyment of outdoor activities and gardening.
Responsibilities
- Assist individuals with cooking meals.
- Help change sheets and make beds.
- Divide clean laundry for individuals to pack away.
- Assist with shaving.
- Assist with showering and dressing the individual in the wheelchair.
- Clean the house.
- Facilitate enjoyment of outdoor activities, including tending to the vegetable garden.
- Support individuals in engaging with activities like watching movies, going on outings, arts and crafts, and playing video games.
