About The Position

The Life Sciences Laboratory Manager is responsible for the efficient management of day-to-day operations of the Life Sciences laboratories (including biology, chemistry, neuropsychology, and psychology labs) at the UNH Manchester campus. This position will oversee and manage laboratory operations including ordering and preparing undergraduate and graduate teaching laboratories; ensuring safety and compliance protocols and procedures are followed in all laboratories; overseeing and keeping records of budgets and spending from Life Sciences budgets as well as Faculty and student grants associated with their research in the Department; maintaining and installing laboratory equipment and conducting space utilization planning in the laboratories; conducting user training and arranging equipment certification and calibration; hiring and managing undergraduate and graduate student lab and research assistants and approving timesheets for that work; and developing, delivering, and assessing high-impact educational programming for UNH undergraduate and graduate students in core and elective coursework. This position will guarantee the lab meets or exceeds all University E&HS standards and work with relevant UNH research and compliance committees to ensure those standards. The position will also liaise with the Biotechnology Innovation Center Assistant Director to develop efficiencies, synergies, and collaborations that benefit both the Life Sciences and BIC organizations at UNH in Manchester.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a biological science or a related field
  • 3-5 Years Experience
  • Evidence of teaching experience and excellence is required.
  • Strong attention to detail, computer proficiency, ability to work in a team environment as well as good technical, organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Can be subjected to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to high heat and/or exposure to chemicals, including atmospheric conditions that affect the skin or respiratory system, i.e., fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, etc.
  • Hazards may also include biological and radiological agents and devices.
  • Must have the ability to wear appropriate safety equipment such as safety glasses or googles, gloves, gowns, lead aprons, face masks, respirators, full body suits, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with laboratory management and budgets is strongly preferred.
  • Ph.D. in a biological science or a related field would be advantageous.
  • Experience with cell culture, microbiology, and/or chemical work would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate prep for all Life Sciences labs (approximately 15-20 labs per semester).
  • Facilitate, order, and receive time and/or environmentally sensitive deliveries of supplies and equipment for the teaching labs.
  • Order and keep needed biological specimens in appropriate conditions for use in the labs.
  • Purchase all lab and research supplies and maintain proper record keeping related to the laboratory and department budgets and/or faculty and student grants for all purchases.
  • Act as a requestor or approver as needed for orders.
  • Oversee the laboratory and department budgets in coordination with the biosciences and psychology/neuropsychology Program Coordinators and Department Chair.
  • Obtain quotes for and purchase any new lab equipment that may be needed.
  • Acquire quotes and place orders for repair, maintenance contracts, and subscriptions needed for laboratory work.
  • Keep track of these contracts and subscriptions to ensure seamless renewal as needed.
  • Train, manage and serve as approver for student lab workers each semester, including lab assistants, research assistants, and students working as learning or teaching assistants in the laboratories.
  • Work with faculty and staff who may need to use the lab during non-class times and for outreach or similar activities outside of the teaching and research programs.
  • Maintain the inventory of supplies, chemicals, consumables etc.
  • Maintain stocks of bacterial and fungal cultures and plants or other specimens growing in the lab.
  • Ensure safety protocols and procedures are followed by all in the undergraduate and graduate teaching and research laboratories.
  • Work with the chemical safety officer to ensure proper storage and handling of chemicals and reagents.
  • Work with the biosafety officer on the proper handling of biological agents and proper biosafety practices.
  • Coordinate with EH&S on proper disposal of all lab chemicals.
  • Maintain proper storage of and coordinate removal of biohazardous waste.
  • Ensure proper bar coding of new equipment occurs in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate and maintain bar coding of chemical inventory.
  • Coordinate maintenance of all lab equipment.
  • Coordinate with Facilities on any building systems that affect the labs.
  • Ensure that a cleaning, disinfection, and compliance schedule for all laboratories is met.
  • Manage the distribution, return and record keeping for all lockers used by students in the Biology and Biotechnology laboratories.
  • Be on call to respond to emergencies outside of regular working hours.
  • Liaise with the Biotechnology Innovation Center Assistant Director to develop efficiencies, synergies, and collaborations that benefit both the Life Sciences and BIC organizations at UNH in Manchester.
  • Teach one lab or lecture course per semester according to the needs of the biosciences programs.
  • Work with Faculty to update curriculum and develop methods to assess and review curriculum for different classes within the program.
  • Work with Faculty to test new equipment to be incorporated into new labs.
  • Help facilitate the preparation and outfitting of labs for new lab courses as they come online.
  • Be available to assist Faculty with any questions that arise pertaining to the location or availability of supplies or equipment within the labs.
  • Additional teaching under an adjunct contract outside of working hours may also be available.
