POSITION SUMMARY: Supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Build members and the community’s understanding of the YMCA’s cause and impact. This position maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Builds personal and meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guests. While exemplifying the Y’s commitment to DEI and the four-character values of caring, honesty, respect & responsibility and responds to all members and community inquiries in a timely manner. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area by continuously scanning the pool area from side to side. Regularly walking around the pool area to check blind spots, steam room, and sauna. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six model” (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Care, Report). Completes related reports as required. Maintains effective, positive, and culturally aware of relationships with members, participants, and other staff. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and for the duration of the shift. Lifeguards may be required to open or close the aquatics center. Attending all staff meetings and in-service training. Fulfills any other functions designated by the YMCA Administration.
