The Lieutenant is responsible for organizing and conducting inspections and searches of inmates, detainees, and offenders, and their living and work areas. This role involves preparing records and reports, maintaining logs, and verifying inmate counts. The Lieutenant fosters a team effort among correctional officers by providing support, motivation, training, and assistance. They are responsible for reporting and investigating unusual occurrences, directing employee work for effectiveness, and supervising the daily routine of the security section. This position enforces post orders, ensures officers are familiar with shift assignments, and handles disciplinary reports and reports of disturbances. The Lieutenant functions as a shift supervisor as needed, supervising, instructing, training, and ensuring the safety of assigned employees, inmates, detainees, and offenders. They also schedule employee and inmate work and off-duty time, and assist in formulating security and work procedures. The role includes supervising and providing custody and security of inmates, detainees, and offenders, which involves observing their actions, performing searches, restraining and securing sometimes assaultive individuals, and transferring and transporting them. Supervision extends to inmates performing technical skills in various operations, involving physical demands like climbing, working outdoors and indoors, and operating equipment. The Lieutenant responds to emergencies, administers first aid, and may use force, including chemical agents and firearms. They must read and apply inmate records related to health, safety, and security, provide information to personnel, comply with policies, enforce disciplinary rules, and supervise record maintenance. A variety of marginal duties may also be assigned.
