The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) works under the supervision of a charge nurse or registered nurse, who delegates tasks within the LVN’s scope of practice. The LVN provides safe, compassionate, focused nursing care to assigned patients with predictable healthcare needs, using continuous quality improvement principles and collaborating with other members of the healthcare team. The role supports a culture of Service Excellence and applies its standards to all customer groups. The LVN helps determine the physical and mental health status, needs, and preferences of diverse patients and families by interpreting health-related data. The LVN collects information, recognizes changes in a patient’s condition, and reports them to the RN or charge nurse. The position has a directed scope of practice under supervision and does not perform independent assessments. The LVN contributes to the nursing process through focused appraisal of a patient’s status, which may be part of a broader assessment performed by an RN. The LVN assesses patient safety risks, applies appropriate precautions, follows organizational and accrediting standards, and observes safety and injury-prevention practices. The role also supports the measurement, assessment, and improvement of management, clinical, and support services, and maintains regulatory compliance with requirements related to The Joint Commission, the Texas Department of State Health Services, and the Texas Board of Nursing.
