About The Position

This Licensed Veterinary Technician position is part of the Anesthesia Service and will assist in anesthesia interdepartmentally throughout AMC. It includes working 8.75 shifts for a total of 70 hours in a two-week pay period. The technician will support the Anesthesiologists with all the tasks associated with both special routine =low risk and critical or emergent=high risk cases, including mitigating anesthesia, troubleshooting, developing drug and technique plans, and case training/mentoring new anesthesia personnel.

Requirements

  • Spent time in surgical or medical anesthesia cases.
  • Advanced anesthesia skills.
  • Able to perform all the tasks associated with both low risk and with higher risk critical and emergent anesthesia procedures.
  • New York State Veterinary Technician’s license or permit.
  • Animal handling experience.
  • Ability to lift and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to work successfully as part of a team.
  • Able to work independently and proactively.
  • Establish and maintain effective, respectful working relationships and customer satisfaction with all stakeholders, including department staff, medical staff, support staff, clients, and referring veterinarians.
  • Ability to remain composed in stressful and emergency situations.
  • Two years of experience as a Licensed Veterinary Technician with advanced anesthesia skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Anesthesiologists with all the tasks associated with both special routine =low risk and critical or emergent=high risk cases, including mitigating anesthesia, troubleshooting, developing drug and technique plans, and case training/mentoring new anesthesia personnel.
  • Perform all the tasks associated with both low risk and with higher risk critical and emergent anesthesia procedures.
  • Working knowledge of pharmaceuticals and equipment used in sedation and anesthesia.
  • Practically handle both low risk and high risk sedation and anesthesia including special needs such as MRI imaging and airway surgery.
  • Teach all levels of learners including starting and peer technicians, assistants, interns, & residents.
  • Answer questions regarding anesthesia, sedation for different species from multiple departments, occasionally referring veterinarians and technicians with assistance from anesthesiologists.
  • Provide anesthesia support for all AMC services.
  • Troubleshoot, operate, and care of surgical and anesthetic equipment.
  • Participate in an overnight anesthesia on-call rotation.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Accurately complete all necessary technical procedures and treatments, with strict adherence to department and hospital protocols.
  • Mentor and train LVTs as necessary.
  • Be involved in identification of cardiopulmonary arrests and resuscitation of patients.
  • Assist and instruct interns and residents regarding policies and protocols and perform all other related duties as required.
