About The Position

Licensed Psychiatric Technicians (LPTs) and Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) provide direct patient care in psychiatric hospitals, mental health facilities, and residential treatment centers under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians. They assess patients, administer medications, implement treatment plans, provide emotional support, monitor progress, and assist with daily living activities. The role requires a valid, active California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians license as a Vocational Nurse or Psychiatric Technician, along with the education and experience described in the qualifications. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Driving is required. The position may involve unsupervised contact with children and requires a full background check and TB exam.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED and four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; two years of relevant experience equals one year of education.
• Possess and maintain a valid, active license from the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians as a Vocational Nurse or Psychiatric Technician.
• Maintain current CPR certification.
• Understand psychiatric illness and its treatment, and have knowledge of psychotropic medication.
• Have previous experience with the population served and/or work in a similar program setting.
• Have knowledge of psychiatric and medical nursing principles and practices.
• Be able to safely administer medications and monitor side effects.
• Be skilled in observing, assessing, and documenting patient behavior and health status.
• Have strong communication skills for interacting with patients, families, and care teams.
• Be competent in implementing treatment plans under supervision.
• Have crisis intervention and de-escalation skills.
• Demonstrate empathy and emotional resilience when supporting patients with mental health needs.
• Be able to assist patients with daily living activities respectfully and with dignity.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and follow documentation standards.
• Understand HIPAA, patient rights, and confidentiality regulations.
• Be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary care team.
• Demonstrate cultural competence in providing care to diverse populations.
• Manage time and prioritize tasks in fast-paced clinical settings.
• Adapt to changing patient needs and treatment protocols.
• Meet the physical requirements, including frequently standing or sitting, using hands for records and medical procedures, communicating with community members, regularly lifting or moving up to 5 pounds, and occasionally lifting or moving up to 10 pounds.
• Complete a full background check and TB exam.

• Bilingual skills in the appropriate language for the Clinics' clients are highly desirable and may be required in some programs.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct care and support to patients in psychiatric and mental health settings.
• Assess patient behavior, vital signs, and response to treatment.
