About The Position

LPNs provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse. This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits. This position is currently approved for a temporary enhanced hourly rate due to critical staffing needs at designated facilities. The enhanced rate will remain in effect only while the facility is experiencing critical staffing shortages.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care
  • Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals
  • Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment
  • Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care

Responsibilities

  • Screens for sick call, administers medications, and provides first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
  • Records all pertinent information into the medical record.
  • Interacts with other departments as needed.
  • Promotes continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Nurses must have the ability to work hours, days and locations as assigned along with being capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
  • Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
