About The Position

Performs nursing procedures under the direction of a psychiatric/MR Nurse. This includes transcribing physician's orders, administering medications (controlled and non-controlled) and treatments to residents with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. The role involves monitoring residents for reactions, assisting physicians with exams and treatments, and managing medical emergencies. Charting resident records, preparing and counting medications, and ordering supplies are also key responsibilities. The Licensed Practical Nurse provides general nursing care, including taking vital signs, assisting with personal hygiene, grooming, eating, toileting, and mobility. They also assist in training residents in these areas, observe and document resident conditions, and implement Nursing Care Plans. Maintaining medical records, performing clerical tasks, and monitoring nursing/medical supplies are required. The position involves attending meetings, directing TPWs in providing healthcare, assisting with new employee orientation, mentoring nursing students, and communicating significant information to supervisors and staff across shifts. Duties also include participating in in-services, workshops, seminars, serving on committees, participating in Quality Assurance, and monitoring living unit environments for health, safety, and sanitation.

Requirements

  • License to practice nursing as a licensed practical nurse issued by Ohio Board of Nursing pursuant to Section 4723 Ohio Revised Code.
  • Proof of completion of an approved course in medication administration.
  • May be exposed to unpredictable resident behavior and contagious diseases.
  • The final candidate selected for the position will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to the appointment to test for illegal drug use.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed Practical Nurses who administer dialysis treatment must possess Certification in IV Therapy pursuant to Section 4723.17 Ohio Revised Code.

Responsibilities

  • Performs nursing procedures under the direction of a psychiatric/MR Nurse.
  • Transcribes physician's orders.
  • Administers controlled and non-controlled physician-prescribed medications and treatments.
  • Checks residents for positive and negative reactions to medications and treatments.
  • Reports negative reactions to the Psychiatric/MR Nurse and/or physician immediately and documents incidents.
  • Assists physician(s) with physical exams, treatment, and/or laboratory tests.
  • Treats medical emergencies and responds to other emergencies.
  • Charts resident records.
  • Prepares and counts medication.
  • Orders medication.
  • Provides medication instructions to residents and other staff members.
  • Orders equipment and supplies to meet the needs of each resident.
  • Provides general nursing to residents.
  • Takes vital signs.
  • Assists with personal hygiene, grooming, eating, toileting, and mobility.
  • Assists in training of residents in personal care areas.
  • Observes, documents, and reports residents' condition(s) to the Psychiatric/MR Nurse and/or physician.
  • Assists the Psychiatric/MR Nurse with resident's documentation and quarterly Health Assessments and Nursing Care Plans.
  • Implements Nursing Care Plans to meet established goals for each resident.
  • Maintains medical records and performs clerical tasks as required.
  • Monitors resident’s medical files monthly.
  • Monitors and maintains adequate nursing/medical supplies on the units.
  • Attends specials, annuals, and placement meetings.
  • Directs TPWs in providing unskilled health care to residents.
  • Assists the Psychiatric/MR Nurse in orientation of new employees.
  • Mentors nursing students during clinical rotation when needed.
  • Assists Psych/MR Nurse with data collection for admissions/discharges.
  • Communicates significant information to immediate supervisor and staff members of all shifts.
  • Performs other related duties, including participating in in-services, attending meetings, workshops, and seminars.
  • Serves on NODC committees.
  • Participates in the Quality Assurance process.
  • Monitors environment of living units for Health, Safety & Sanitation.
  • Reports and/or corrects violations.
