The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for performing delegated and assigned functions by the registered professional nurse. In simple nursing situations, the LPN works with minimal guidance and supervision. In more complex situations, the LPN functions as an assistant to the registered nurse. The LPN will evaluate and complete assessments of patient needs to provide supportive care before, during, and after surgery, and maintain accurate and complete records. They will communicate pertinent information to coworkers, provide a safe environment for the patient to prevent potential injury, and investigate and intervene in problem situations, reporting appropriate information to the supervisor and documenting the same. Responsibilities include cleaning and disinfection of equipment, operating and troubleshooting specialized equipment and patient monitoring equipment, and anticipating and assisting with maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies and medications. The LPN is accountable for the administration of drugs (except for IV procedures) and other therapeutic and diagnostic measures in a safe and accurate manner. They will ensure informed signed consent is completed prior to administration of sedation, consult with appropriate supervisor or physicians as needed, and seek educational opportunities and accept responsibility for their own professional growth and development. The LPN will participate in in-service opportunities and staff meetings, accept direction from supervisors or physicians, and adhere to established routines. They will maintain patient’s rights to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitors/family or clients. The LPN must maintain flexibility and perform other duties as required, function within the legal limits of nursing practice, refer situations beyond their ability or function to the proper person, and report errors of commission/omission. They will participate in the performance improvement program, assist in crash cart maintenance and defibrillator checks, and assist in the completion of the ambulatory surgery center patient logbook. The LPN will observe universal precautions, assist with housekeeping responsibilities as directed by the recovery room nurse and/or operating room nurse, and inform the nurse in charge when leaving for break and lunch or for the day. They will explain procedures to patients, place patients at ease, and offer reassurance as needed. The LPN will perform other tasks and duties as directed by the clinical director or physician that are within their legal limitations, keep all working areas clean, neat, and stocked, and clean rooms after each patient and leave them ready for the next patient. They will prepare patients as requested by the physician according to the type of procedure and assist with answering the phone when necessary.
