About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will work on the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team. This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week, with a schedule of Monday through Thursday from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, and Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. The role is based in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Requirements

  • Must possess a current LPN license to practice in the state of Alabama.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology in psychiatric care required.
  • Valid Alabama Driver's License and a good driving record as defined by Indian Rivers policy.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Working knowledge of psychiatric disorders in adult populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general and psychiatric nursing care.
  • Effective knowledge of adult consumers as related to all intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical aspects of their development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of behavior management, crisis intervention, and interventions common to acute psychiatric consumers as well as to non-violent crisis intervention practice.
  • Knowledge of instruction and teaching tools appropriate to adult populations.
  • Effective knowledge of effects and treatment of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and neglect issues.
  • Knowledge of cultural diversity.
  • In-depth knowledge of medical and psychotropic medications.
  • Must be knowledgeable of and abide by HIPAA regulations with regard to protected health information.
  • Physical presence onsite is essential.
  • Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
  • Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a mental health setting preferred.
  • Familiarity with psycho-pharmacy and the use of psychotropic medications with the adult population preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete the admission process for consumers, including medical checklist/physical health/nutritional screening, medication list, vital signs, height/weight, AIMS, and admission notes.
  • Transcribe and post all MD medication orders on the medication logs.
  • Work with consumers to ensure they understand their medications, how to take them, and how to observe for potential side effects.
  • Provide nursing care as indicated and monitor medical status with each visit.
  • Monitor consumers' compliance with medication and medical interventions.
  • Refer consumer concerns by consultation to the MD/CRNP.
  • Ensure consumers know how to acquire medication.
  • Provide medication education for the consumer and family, including uses and potential side effects.
  • Monitor consumers for potential side effects of medications and report findings to the RN, CRNP, and physician.
  • Communicate effectively with RN, CRNP, and physician regarding the consumer's physical and mental condition.
  • Interface with the multi-disciplinary team and actively and cooperatively participate in the development of the interdisciplinary treatment plan.
  • Contact laboratory, request and monitor results, and report all findings to the physician.
  • Provide emergency care as needed.
  • Recognize the elements of a crisis state and know how to deescalate or resolve the situation.
  • Adhere to professional code of ethics.
  • Document in a clear, concise manner, types of consumer problems, treatment goals, and services provided.
  • Treat consumers with care, dignity, and compassion.
  • Respect consumer's privacy and confidentiality.
  • Support Organizational Code of Conduct, Standards Compliance, HIPAA, and Security Programs.
  • Maintain the confidential nature of all consumer and Organization related activities by not divulging information outside the facility.
  • Adhere to attendance and punctuality policy by allowing adequate time to arrive, clock-in, and assume responsibilities at the designated time.
  • Comply with all standards related to safety and health.
  • Identify opportunities for improving the quality of services provided by the department and the organization.
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor or Executive Director.
