About The Position

This is a part-time wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits. The role involves providing nursing care within adult institutions by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice. Standard of care is achieved through a multitude of services to include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care. All pertinent information is documented into the health record while practicing confidentiality and interfacing with other departments on an as-needed basis. The position requires the ability to delegate tasks/workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned. The nurse is capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs. The role aims to provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care
  • Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals
  • Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment
  • Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care
