About The Position

This is a PRN (as needed) Licensed Practical Nurse position at Coffeewood Correctional Center, focusing on providing evidence-based nursing care within a Substance Use Recovery Team. The role involves screening patients, administering medications, providing first aid and basic life support, maintaining medical records, and collaborating with security and treatment staff. Nurses must be adaptable to varying work schedules and assignments to meet institutional needs. This is a wage position limited to 1,500 hours per agency during a 12-month period and does not offer state benefits.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of practical or general nursing care
  • Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals
  • Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment
  • Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care

Responsibilities

  • Provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices, and techniques of general nursing care under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Screen for sick call, administer medications, and provide first aid and basic life support to patients and employees.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with security and treatment staff, providing input for treatment plans.
  • Record all pertinent information into the medical record.
  • Interact with other departments as needed.
  • Promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Work hours, days, and locations as assigned and be available for coverage as needed.
  • Perform other duties or assignments as necessary to meet clinical and administrative needs.
