About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse is a member of the Clinical Team, collaborating in the delivery of care to meet the needs of patients/families in the Ambulatory Clinic setting (including but not limited to General Gynaecology, Uro- Gynaecology , Reproductive Endocrinology). The LPN is responsible and accountable to the public for his/her own practice according to the standards defined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Nova Scotia and the policies, standards and procedures of the IWK Health Centre. The LPN may, at times, be reassigned within the Childbirth & Women’s Health Care Team and will remain flexible and willing to cross train within the Team consistent with the philosophy, objectives, mission and vision statement of the IWK Health Centre. Shift flexibility is required to meet the operational needs of the women being serviced within this care team.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved two-year Practical Nursing program required (2-year diploma preferred).
  • Licensed by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing required.
  • Current successful completion of a CPR Level C Health Care Provider or Basic Life Support (BLS) course required within the last 12 months.
  • Recent interview and health assessment skills required
  • Recent clinical experience that includes administration of medication as required.
  • Ability to teach on a one to one basis required.
  • Demonstrated experience assisting Physicians with minor procedures required.
  • Knowledge of Women's Health required.
  • Knowledge of Women’s Reproductive Endocrine required.
  • Knowledge of Women’s Pelvic Floor required.
  • Experience in Uro-dynamic studies required.
  • Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team and to request and accept direction as required is essential.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking required within scope of practice including: clinical judgment, problem solving skills and strong decision making ability.
  • Demonstrated professional manner required, along with effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention certificate an asset.
  • Recent experience in other areas of the Childbirth and Women’s Health Care Team considered an asset.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.
  • Experience with telephone facilitated care an asset.
