About The Position

This is a full-time position with the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Homes in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The facility serves South Dakota Veterans and their families through quality healthcare in a community of trust, dignity, and sharing. The home offers 70 private nursing care units and 23 units for independent living. The role involves caring for America's Heroes while maintaining work-life balance. The position provides patient care within the scope of practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) by preparing and administering prescribed medications and treatments, IV therapies, maintaining medical records, and monitoring the work of subordinates to ensure quality care is provided in compliance with patient care procedures and department policies. The role requires the application of basic nursing principles, practices, and techniques following established healthcare procedures and standards. Employees in this role usually operate in a patient care environment where the focus is on the healthcare of individuals. Incumbents seek guidance from experienced colleagues and focus on gaining knowledge and experience to perform more independently. The position is in a long-term care setting.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or eligible to be licensed in the State of South Dakota.
  • All certificates and/or tests required for performance at this level must be obtained and/or completed.
  • Knowledge of Professional Nursing Theory and practices.
  • Knowledge of recent developments in the field of professional nursing applicable to the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of clinical procedures.
  • Ability to keep records.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to operate a variety of medical equipment.
  • Ability to make reports on observations.
  • Ability to apply general nursing techniques and practices.
  • Ability to maintain a helpful and sympathetic attitude toward patients.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to deal effectively with patients and staff.
