About The Position

The Arizona Department of Veterans' Services (ADVS) is seeking compassionate Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to join their team. This integral position is responsible for carrying out all geriatric nursing care, treatment, and services in a professional and prescribed manner, serving and honoring veterans, service members, and their families. The role offers the opportunity to provide the highest quality direct care services to veterans, participate in facility meetings and training, and implement the Arizona Management System (AMS) for continuous improvement within a supportive team environment.

Requirements

  • Current or temporary license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Arizona
  • Current Negative TB skin test (Mantoux skin test) within the last twelve months or a written statement from a physician, physician’s assistant or a registered nurse practitioner indicating freedom from Tuberculosis, if in the past has had a positive skin test or Tuberculosis
  • Must be able to obtain and retain a fingerprint clearance card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety
  • Current CPR card that was obtained by physical assessment
  • Knowledge of gerontological/geriatric nursing theory and practice
  • Knowledge of resident condition and changing medical/physical /psychological care needs
  • Knowledge of effects of the aging process
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures of team nursing
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures for implementing treatment plans for resident/patient care
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures of pharmacology and medicines
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and agency laws, rules and regulations governing general practical nursing practices and the security and control of medical supplies and medications and dispensing thereof
  • Skill in practical nursing methods and techniques
  • Skill in observing and reporting behavior and progress of residents/patients
  • Skill in applying and interpreting State and agency laws and regulations governing geriatric nursing practices
  • Skill in assisting in the development and implementation of patient care plans within a team nursing concept
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Ability to assess client needs and evaluate usefulness or suitability of resources
  • Ability to work with difficult people; establish and maintain excellent working relationships with clients, client families, team member and service providers

Responsibilities

  • Administers medication and performs treatments on an assigned unit as ordered by the physician and within scope of license (Medications may be in a variety of forms including oral, enteral, parenteral, suppository, etc. Treatments may include sterile and aseptic wound cleaning and dressing, postural drainage and percussion, tracheostomy, gastrostomy and jejunostomy, and catheter care.)
  • Observes and reports the effectiveness of medications and treatments
  • Ensures an adequate amount of supplies and medication are available
  • Receives and delivers a variety of information regarding the residents’ medical, social, functional and other needs
  • Participates in the receiving and giving of shift reports
  • Communicates with residents, family and staff as necessary to ensure the resident receives appropriate care from the interdisciplinary team
  • Completes the initial admission nursing assessment tool on a newly admitted resident. Assists with the development of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments, ongoing quarterly reviews, and care plans
  • Supervises subordinate staff and assists as need with direct resident care for the completion of Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) including bathing, dressing, observations, treatment, and summary of resident progress.
  • Conducts and participates in in-service training and staff development programs for regularly employed staff
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings
  • May collect and analyze data for quality improvement and infection control programs
  • Trains/orients new employees
  • Performs other technical duties as assigned (e.g. collects specimens, responds to emergency situations rapidly and appropriately)
