Licensed Practical Nurse (Part-time): St. Brides Correctional Center
About The Position
This is a part-time position for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) seeking additional hours, with an average of no more than 29 hours per week. LPNs provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices, and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Responsibilities include screening for sick call, administering medications, providing first aid and basic life support, maintaining communication with security and treatment staff, recording pertinent information into the medical record, interacting with other departments, and promoting continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing. Nurses must be able to work assigned hours, days, and locations, and be available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary. This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. Wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
- Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care
- Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals
- Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care
- Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire
Nice To Haves
- Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment
- Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care
Responsibilities

- Ability to work hours, days and locations as assigned along with being capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
- Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
