About The Position

MUSC Community Physicians (MCP) provides healthcare across rural South Carolina. The RN II provides nursing care using the nursing process, directing team members and collaborating with multidisciplinary staff to provide appropriate care within a secure correctional setting. This PRN position is for the Lancaster County Detention Center and requires 8 hours weekly. The role involves providing nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. It includes directing and leading team members, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and providing patient-centered care that addresses physical, emotional, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. The nurse will conduct assessments, develop nursing diagnoses, identify outcomes, plan and implement interventions, provide health teaching, and evaluate care. A therapeutic environment will be ensured, and participation in professional governance and development is expected. Correctional-specific responsibilities include delivering nursing care to inmates/detainees while following correctional facility safety and security protocols, responding promptly to emergencies, managing care in various units, coordinating with correctional officers, maintaining strict control of sharps and medications, ensuring proper boundaries and compliance with PREA expectations, and documenting care in accordance with correctional medical record requirements.

Requirements

Graduate from an accredited Practical Nurse program with six months of patient care experience required.
Licensed as an LPN within the state of South Carolina or a compact state.
A current CPR card is required; either an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers card or an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer card.
Ability to demonstrate commitment to patient centered care philosophy as evidenced by effective communications skills, professional demeanor, and excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability and motivation to articulate and support departmental philosophy of excellent guest relations.
Must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Must be computer literate.
Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor of Nursing preferred.
RN staff hired after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree must be enrolled in a BSN program within two years and complete it within four years.
Minimum one year of RN experience required.

Responsibilities

Delivers nursing care to inmates/detainees while following correctional facility safety and security protocols.
Responds promptly to emergencies anywhere within the secure perimeter (medical emergencies, injuries, suicide attempts, etc.).
Manages care in intake/booking, general population, segregation, and medical observation units.
Coordinates with correctional officers for safe inmate movement and maintaining awareness of the security environment.
Maintains strict control and accountability of sharps, medications, and clinical tools.
Ensures proper boundaries, communication standards, and compliance with PREA expectations.
Documents care in accordance with correctional medical record requirements and chain-of-custody considerations when applicable.
