Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is implementing minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs) to enhance nursing practice and strengthen quality of care. mNPRs set the minimum number of nurses providing care to patients on a given unit, developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU) and health organizations. VCH is committed to fostering quality practice and learning environments. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) on the Acute Medicine Unit at UBC Hospital in Vancouver, BC. The LPN practices within a client and family centred care model, adhering to the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice. The role involves working independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary care team, performing the full scope of practical nursing functions for clients with predictable outcomes within a designated specialty area. This includes assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting client care, as well as providing support to clients and their families. The LPN also collaborates with the interdisciplinary team and, under general supervision, supports the Registered Nurse in caring for clients with unpredictable outcomes or those requiring an advanced level of knowledge and skill beyond the LPN's scope of practice. The LPN is expected to maintain and advance clinical competence according to BCCNM standards.
