About The Position

This role is for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Medical Assistant (MA) at Roper St. Francis Healthcare. The position involves providing nursing care in an outpatient physician practice setting under the direction of a provider. Responsibilities include preparing patients for visits, updating medication histories, performing patient-related tasks, communicating clinical advice, ensuring medical records are available, and coordinating with team members for exceptional patient service. The role requires proficiency with practice management software and EHR systems. The position is scheduled for 40 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with primary work at Berkeley MOB and one day a week at Mount Pleasant MOB. There is a possibility of floating to other locations for coverage. Preferences include 1-2 years of experience as an LPN and/or CMA, or 1-2 years of experience if an MA.

Requirements

  • Currently licensed as an LPN in the state of South Carolina or hold a current compact/multi-state license as a Licensed Practical Nurse in a recognized NCSBN Compact State and is not a permanent resident of SC.
  • Must have a current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.
  • None required (for LPN experience).
  • Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA); American Association of Medical Assisting Registered Medical Assistant (RMA); American Medical Technologists Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA); Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
  • If incumbent is unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (not accepted in the state of South Carolina).
  • BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH).
  • High School/GED (required).
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program (preferred in all states except South Carolina).
  • In South Carolina (completion of one of the below is required): An accredited Medical assistant post-secondary education program, A Career and technical education health sciences program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education, A medical assisting program provided by a branch of the United States military, A Medical assisting United States Department of Labor approved Registered Apprenticeship program, A Training program that is delivered, in whole or in part, by a health care employer that aligns to a nationally accredited certification exam.
  • Successful completion of accredited Medical Assistant training program required for external applicants.

  • 1-2 years experience as a LPN and/or CMA is preferred.

  • Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred).
  • 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred).
  • Phlebotomy skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care for physician practice patients following established standards and practices in accordance with the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act.
  • Apply knowledge of patient care tasks and techniques to provide nursing care.
  • Provide patient care in outpatient physician practice under the direction of the practicing MD, APP or RN.
  • Responsible for staging patients in preparation to see providers.
  • Update all patient medications in the medication history at each visit.
  • Perform patient related tasks as directed by practice providers.
  • Facilitate the timely communication of clinical advice to patients electronically or by phone as directed by practice providers.
  • Ensure all needed medical records are available to care team and providers prior to patient’s office visit.
  • Coordinate with other team members to provide exceptional patient service.
  • Contribute to the completion of the patient’s chief complaint (including, but not limited, to respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature).
  • Document patient/family needs.
  • Participate in planning and implementing care for patients.
  • Administer ordered medications (oral, injection, topically, etc.) within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines.
  • Identify significant changes in patient condition through data collection and report them to the provider.
  • Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
  • Maintain clinical and administrative skills per the departmental competency guidelines to meet patient care and daily operational needs.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Travel to other facilities for providers or adjust hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the practice manager as needed.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment by keeping the work area, exam rooms, and equipment in clean, orderly, and safe manner, ensuring availability and proper functioning of supplies and equipment.
  • Assist patient and provider with virtual health visits which may include setting up the visit through appropriate platform, pre-charting the virtual visit prior to the scheduled appointment, contacting the patient to ensure preparedness for the virtual visit, troubleshooting virtual visit issues when needed, obtaining chief complaint and health maintenance checks, medication review, and other relevant patient details prior to the actual virtual visit.
  • Document in electronic medical records (EMR) accurately and appropriately.
  • Manage in basket messages in the electronic health record (EHR) under the Provider’s verbatim instructions.
  • May perform front desk workflows (i.e., My Chart requests, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out).
  • Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow up visits and collect co-pays as needed.
  • Order supplies appropriately, track referrals, labs and diagnostic tests, dispose of contaminated supplies, etc.
  • Assist with other clinical and clerical duties to ensure optimization of patient experience within the practice.
  • Record vital signs on all patients at every visit according to practice protocols.
