About The Position

This role is for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and/or Medical Assistant Certified (CMA) in an Oncology setting. The LPN is responsible for patient care using the nursing process, including data collection, assessment, identifying patient needs, and evaluating care outcomes. They coordinate patient teaching and care with other health team members, adhering to documentation standards. The CMA is a multi-skilled clinical professional providing patient care under the direction of a provider, contributing to patient assessments, documenting needs, and administering medications within their scope. Both roles involve direct patient care and administrative tasks within their respective scopes of practice.

Requirements

  • Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from the state of employment or LPN applicant
  • BLS certification is preferred upon hire and required within 30 days and/or prior to independent patient care
  • Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA); American Association of Medical Assisting, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA); American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA); National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA); National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) (not accepted in the state of South Carolina)
  • BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH)
  • High School/GED (required)
  • In South Carolina (completion of one of the below is required): An accredited Medical assistant post-secondary education program, A Career and technical education health sciences program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education, A medical assisting program provided by a branch of the United States military, A Medical assisting United States Department of Labor approved Registered Apprenticeship program, A Training program that is delivered, in whole or in part, by a health care employer that aligns to a nationally accredited certification exam

Responsibilities

  • Analyze assessment data, evaluate patient's condition, and collaborate with the provider to develop and maintain the patient's plan of care.
  • Provide education to patients, families, and staff members, in conjunction with other healthcare entities, under the direction of the provider or manager.
  • Coordinate the care of the patient with other healthcare entities according to the patient's plan of care.
  • Administer medications in a safe manner, consistent with organizational policies, procedures, and state requirements.
  • Serve as subject matter experts and clinical and professional mentors within the practice (for LPNs in a lead position).
  • Understand and adhere to the legal responsibilities and requirements within the Medical Assistant role.
  • Identify significant changes in patient condition through data collection and report them to the provider.
  • Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to the provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
  • Demonstrate standards of excellence in care in all interactions, for both internal and external customers.
  • Maintain clinical and administrative skills per departmental competency guidelines to meet patient care and daily operational needs.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Travel to other facilities for providers or adjust hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the practice manager.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment by keeping the work area, exam rooms, and equipment in clean, orderly, and safe manner, ensuring availability and proper functioning of supplies and equipment.
  • Assist patient and provider with virtual health visits, including setup, pre-charting, patient contact, troubleshooting, obtaining chief complaint, and medication review.
  • Document in electronic medical records (EMR) accurately and appropriately.
  • Manage in-basket messages in the electronic health record (EHR) under the Provider’s verbatim instructions.
  • May perform front desk workflows (e.g., My Chart requests, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out).
  • Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow up visits and collect co-pays as needed.
  • Order supplies appropriately, track referrals, labs and diagnostic tests, dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
  • Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
  • Provide authorized prescription and drug refill information for pharmacies as directed by provider.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
  • Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms.
  • Successfully complete skills or competency checklists to be able to help physicians examine and treat patients, performing such tasks as handing them instruments, giving injections, removing sutures, changing dressings on wounds.
