The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Acute Care provides patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse and contributes to the physical and emotional comfort of patients and their families. The LPN provides direct patient care in collaboration with other health care team members and completes other tasks that support patient care. The New York State Education Department’s differentiated scope of practice for LPNs and RNs is used to determine which tasks the LPN may perform, along with the referenced Highland Hospital Department of Nursing policy and New York State Office of Professions guidance. This position is on the West 7 General Medicine/Surgical Unit, a complex-care unit specializing in stroke, cystic fibrosis, and alcohol withdrawal. It is a primary general medical unit serving patients with multiple diagnoses and demographics, including pneumonia, COPD, alcohol withdrawal, and other conditions. In addition to Level I requirements, Level II LPNs provide preceptorship for new-hire PCTs and new-hire Level I or II LPN orientees after completing the Ancillary Preceptor Course. They complete required annual preceptor-enrichment and gerontology training and earn continuing education credits.
