Depending on the assigned clinical area within the Ambulatory Care Unit, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) may be required to be competent in multiple clinical settings. This job description addresses various scenarios where nurses are required to work in one or more areas requiring advanced training and experience. In accordance with established vision and values of the organization, the LPN practices to full scope as per the Standards of Practice outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), as well as within a client and family-centered care model approach. Working in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, the LPN performs assessments, plans, implements and provides personal and nursing care to clients, according to organizational policies, procedures, standards, and unit specific protocols. The scope or extent of the skills that the LPN performs varies according to the predictability of the outcome for a given client population.

Requirements

• Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses and current practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
• Successful completion of the IV Medication Administration Education program.
• Current CPR certification required.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to deal with others effectively.
• Ability to organize work.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

Nice To Haves

• Advanced preparation in the clinical specialty of the assigned area as required by the position: Minor Procedures Clinic - completion of recognized post-basic education in perioperative nursing, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Recent related ambulatory care or perioperative unit experience which includes experience in minor surgical, oncology, and/or medical specialty clinics in an acute care facility.
• GI Endoscopy: completion of recognized post-basic education in gastroenterology/GI endoscopy nursing, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Preference given to those with recent related GI endoscopy experience. Perioperative, peri-anesthesia, or critical care nursing education may also be considered when there are no qualified applicants with gastroenterology/GI endoscopy nursing education.

Responsibilities

• Assesses and monitors client and family’s actual and potential strengths and limitations including physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, and spiritual needs. Where appropriate, encourages client participation in activities of daily living. Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with the client and significant others using interpersonal and interviewing techniques ensuring client choice and autonomy in decision-making and care planning.
• Contributes to the development and ongoing changes to the individualized plan of care, including attending and providing input into multidisciplinary care planning meetings and family conferences. Advocates for the interest of the client and family.
• Upon completion of formal post-basic education and training, performs technical skills and physician support within the procedure room, according to scope of practice including a team nursing approach.
• Administers oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medications in accordance with scope of practice, organizational and pharmaceutical policies and procedures.
• Performs peripheral intravenous (IV) catheter insertion, provides maintenance of IV infusions by assessing the catheter insertion site and monitoring flow rate, and discontinues IV access, as per physician orders.
• Performs nursing procedures and interventions and monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the procedures and interventions. Procedures include head to toe assessments, airway management, nutrition management, infusion management, catheterizations, applying and changing simple sterile and/or nonsterile dressings, colostomy care and irrigation, taking/recording blood pressures, administering suppositories and enemas, taking/recording temperature, pulse and respiration; records observations and reports problems and/or changes to designated nursing staff. Performs unit specific nursing procedures and interventions as required.
• Communicates the clients condition and changes to the designated RN/RPN.
• Provides personal care to client including assisting with bathing, dressing, care of skin and hair; changing beds, and assisting with toileting needs.
• Performs admissions, discharges, and transfers of clients according to facility operating policies and procedures.
• Documents and updates all relevant information about care and procedures to achieve client safety and comfort according to unit specific policy and procedure.
• Performs related clerical duties such as answering the telephone, making appointments, ordering supplies, and initiating diagnostic requisitions.
• Assists in the orientation and sharing information with new staff, students, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Participates in continuous quality improvement and program evaluation activities, education sessions, team conferences, meetings, and committees.
• Maintains a safe environment for clients, family, and staff, through: a. Accident prevention, b. Knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations, c. Using skills, physical facilities, supplies and equipment safely and appropriately, and d. Practicing infection control procedures.
• Participates and attends in-service and other educational programs as required. Identifies learning goals and maintains and updates current clinical competence and knowledge within area of practice.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
