About The Position

BJ’s Wholesale Club is seeking a Licensed Optical Manager to perform all duties of an optician, in addition to managerial responsibilities. This role involves managing, teaching, and coaching optical team members, interacting with members, confirming appointments, and maintaining the department. The Optical Manager acts as the liaison between members and the lab to ensure timely order processing. The advertised pay range does not include additional compensation from manager bonus and spiff programs. Leadership involves strategic thinking, sound decision-making using business data, leading through change, modeling leadership competencies, building credibility, and championing business growth. Effective communication, providing necessary team information, and building high-performing teams through collaboration are key. Providing honest and timely direction, follow-up, and feedback is essential for driving business results and supporting team member engagement. Delivering results requires executing business expectations within timeframes by setting clear expectations, utilizing follow-up, and ensuring accountability. Team member management includes teaching, coaching, and leading through the club-level training process, supporting engagement, and enabling policy/procedure/compliance application. Driving a culture of development, strategic thinking, ethical decision-making, and engagement is crucial. Leading with the team member and member in mind to address concerns and escalating appropriately is expected. Ensuring a safe and positive environment for team members and members, embracing inclusion and diversity, acknowledging success, working collaboratively, and identifying/retaining top talent are core aspects of the role. Service excellence is paramount through all member contact points, setting service standards, providing team support and empowerment to resolve concerns, and ensuring a safe and positive member experience. Daily commitment to GOLD Member Standards (Greet, Anticipate, Appreciate) and Club Standards (Grand opening look, stocked items, planograms, signage, cleanliness) is required. Understanding the business involves acquiring deep knowledge of key metrics and reporting for total club and department performance, driving performance and profitability by identifying trends and opportunities, and correcting process breakdowns before they impact metrics. Communicating the connection between operational performance and financial targets to the team is also important.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed to work as an optician within the State and keep license up to date and active.
  • High school diploma, college degree, and/or big box wholesale, retail, optical, and/or management experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including managing/supervising cross-functional teams, training team members, and driving and communicating results.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, customer service skills, organizational skills and an attention to detail required.
  • Open shift availability required.
  • At least 18 years of age.

  • Knowledge of optical products and business practices preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides a high level of Member service, including answering all incoming calls, scheduling patients for eye exams, being open and honest in communication and maintaining a friendly, pleasant demeanor with Members at all times.
  • Provides support to Members in making eyeglass adjustments, taking measurements, reading prescriptions on the lensometer, timely notification of product readiness, proper handling of all money related transaction, and completing paperwork necessary to place and process orders.
  • Manages Optical department team members and ensures all team members diligently engage in person and over the phone with Members.
  • Manages all sales opening and closing procedures at the end of the shift.
  • Ensures that accurate funds are collected, and payments are made at the point of service.
  • Strives to deliver sales and metric goals by educating patients on the benefits of available products, and by recommending those that will improve their visual needs.
  • Spends downtime engaging with members in front of Optical.
  • Communicates and follows up with Club Manager and Regional Optical Manager regarding department performance, maintenance situations, team member’s performance, and doctor relations.
  • Ensure workstation/Optical department is always maintained and clean.
  • Supervises all team members in the Optical department and is responsible for training, separations, recommendation for promotions, and coaching.
  • Maintains all club policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of this job.
