About The Position

Provides genetic counseling to patients, specializing in Pediatrics. Specific duties include: Prepare detailed patient family medical histories to analyze genetic information to identify a patient's risk for specific genetic disorders or syndromes Explain risks and benefits of various diagnostic procedures, and facilitate a decision making process for patients Discuss testing options and associated risks to assist patients in making informed medical decisions, and maintain communications with families through decision making and resolutions Prepare detailed reports of patient sessions to provide information on complex genetic concepts to referring care providers Interpret laboratory results to determine and coordinate patient treatment plans Provide supportive, comprehensive, non-directive counseling Provide results of normal tests to patients and notify primary care providers of abnormal results Collect patient data and prepare clinical plans for patients scheduled for genetics counseling Prepare three generation pedigrees (family history in teh assessment of risk for common disease), and anticipate patient's needs to obtain information for case management Coordinate patient care with appropriate departments Serve as a technical resource to both the hospital and community, provide staff education, and develop goals for professional development Further Research in Genetic Counseling

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Human Genetics
  • Completion of at least 3 months of prenatal and/or pediatric internships
  • Experience providing direct independent pediatric patient care through employment or internships
  • American Board of Genetic Counseling Certification; and
  • Genetic Counselor State License
