About The Position

Library Technician positions perform copy cataloging of library materials applying basic international, national, and local cataloging principles and practices; search, select, edit, and enter information into bibliographic and item records; perform database maintenance activities, including adding item level holding information, updating and correcting item records, and performing item transfers and changes; cross-check the work of other Cataloging Section staff members; and train staff in cataloging procedures; and perform other duties as assigned. Library Technician employees work schedules may include evenings and weekends. Library Technician employees are required to have the ability to sit at a computer work station for long periods of time; ability to stoop, bend, and reach above head to retrieve materials; ability to lift, carry and/or pull items weighing a minimum of 30 pounds. Library Technician employees may be required to compile, extract, and maintain library statistics; create, edit, or revise documents into finished format and convert documents into new files; post new files to library intranet. Library Technician positions may require bilingual communication skills for which an additional $1.40 per hour may be paid.

Requirements

  • One year of full-time experience as a Library Assistant II with the City of San Diego.
  • Eighteen months of full-time experience performing customer service and clerical duties with a government jurisdiction or college/university library, including issuing library cards, providing information about library services, using an automated system to check materials in and out, placing new orders for library materials, receiving, processing and distributing new library materials, searching databases for bibliographic records, entering cataloging data into an automated database, and personal computer (PC) word processing experience.
  • Successful completion of 45 semester/68 quarter college-level units.
  • A combination of experience and education as specified above equaling 2700 hours.
  • Proof of transcripts, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
  • Proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the use of electronic communication and information retrieval database systems.
  • Experience with automated bibliographic, cataloging, materials circulation and patron database systems.
  • Bilingual communication skills.
