About The Position

The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library is seeking a Makerspace Library Technician I to provide instruction and assistance to the public. This role involves offering access to crafting and small-scale art and design equipment such as 3-D printers, CNC machines, and sewing machines, as well as conducting instructional classes. The ideal candidate should be organized, a strong communicator, passionate about libraries and literacy, and eager to connect the community with makerspace resources, services, and events to foster exploration, creativity, and learning.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience in installing and troubleshooting software and hardware configurations.
  • Knowledge of basic programming and one board computers such as Arduinos, Raspberry Pi, etc.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in both written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to design and deliver training courses and curriculum for use with makerspace equipment.
  • Ability to safely and correctly operate a variety of tools.
  • Ability to establish and effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, corporate representatives, officials of other agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.
  • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • One (1) or more years of additional experience in 3D modeling, CAD, or a maker role; or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides a demonstrated potential for performing the duties of the position.
  • A valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the planning, scheduling, promotion, and implementation of maker-related programming for patrons of all ages.
  • Providing maker and technology-related customer service and training to the public and other staff members.
  • Assisting in maintaining reports and statistics relating to makerspace use and program attendance.
  • Acting as a team member in fulfilling the Library’s Mission Statement.
  • Potentially training and supervising paraprofessional or entry-level staff in specific tasks.
  • Acting as an expert for patrons using the makerspace facility and equipment, ensuring safe handling of equipment and materials.
  • Responding to telephone, electronic, and in-person requests for information and assistance at public service desks.
  • Mediating and deescalating customer complaints and dissatisfaction with library resources, materials, and services when required, referring complex issues to a supervisor.
  • Participating in system-wide committees, boards, projects, meetings, and initiatives as needed.
  • Assisting in the planning, scheduling, and teaching of courses in basic certification, safety, and general use of makerspace equipment, including 3D modeling, for the general public and other staff.
  • Assisting in the research and development of innovative maker activities and programs.
  • Monitoring the makerspace area and equipment and alerting the branch manager to any maintenance issues.
  • Potentially updating, maintaining, and troubleshooting makerspace equipment as needed; tracking inventory and requesting purchase of consumables.
  • Participating in special projects and performing other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Pay rate of $17.00 an hour.
