About The Position

This position has four primary areas of work: literacy coordinator, branch clerk, reference clerk, and youth services. A clerk may be assigned full or partial responsibility for some or all of the duties, traditionally overseeing two primary areas. There will be cross-training in all four areas. The role involves coordinating literacy programs, supervising branch operations, handling reference requests, and developing youth services programming. Specific duties include tutor/student intake, record-keeping, coordination with other literacy programs, supervising staff and volunteers, managing branch appearance, assisting patrons with electronic devices, organizing children's and teens' programs, and creating displays and outreach materials.

Requirements

  • Strong English skills are required, including complete literacy in English reading, speaking, and writing.
  • Knowledge of and ability with standard Microsoft products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of how personal electronic devices (tablets, smartphones) work and their various applications.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with supervisors, staff, and the public.
  • Two years of experience with multiple computer operating systems.
  • Ability to connect handheld electronic devices to the internet.
  • Graduation from high school, GED, CHSPE, or another equivalency.

Nice To Haves

  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish is desirable.
  • Knowledge of multiple operating systems is a plus.
  • An Associate degree and/or library technology certificate is preferred, but a combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Literacy Coordinator duties: Tutor and/or student intake, preliminary evaluations, matching tutors and students, record-keeping of statistics and forms, creation and maintenance of files, coordination with other literacy programs, providing support to tutors and learners, recommending materials and resources, working with AmeriCorps members for scheduling, and adhering to Pro Literacy Worldwide (PLW) and California State Library Literacy Services (CLLS) standards.
  • Branch Supervisor duties: Supervising the desk during open hours, following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and manual duties, supervising aides, pages, or program volunteers, transporting materials between libraries, coordinating programming, coordinating with the Circulation Supervisor for overdue and ILL processing, coordinating with Del Rio staff for class visits, maintaining the general appearance of the branch facility (cleanliness, displays, shelving), adhering to library policies and rules, and maintaining statistics and reports.
  • Reference Clerk duties: Handling second-level reference requests, performing research using electronic and print resources in coordination with the Library Manager, recommending materials for purchase or borrowing to the Director, keeping statistics and records of transactions, performing generalized reference work, creating pathfinders or bibliographies, and assisting patrons with electronic devices.
  • Youth Services Programming duties: Developing and presenting children's and teens' programming, including the summer reading program, story-times, and culminating parties. Organizing programming with outside presenters, managing book clubs and teen advisory groups, offering class visits to the library and staff visits to schools.
  • Supervision duties: Supervising the front desk, demonstrating familiarity with circulation policies and procedures, utilizing strong decision-making skills, supervising volunteers and program personnel, creating bulletin board and book displays, developing bibliographies and webliographies, coordinating class visits, conducting adult outreach and programming, creating flyers and media releases, and undertaking other assigned duties and projects.
