About The Position

The City of Wauwatosa is hiring a year-round, part-time evening Library Shelver for the Wauwatosa Public Library. The position works approximately 12 hours per week, including rotating weekend shifts, and pays $14.00 per hour. Library Shelvers organize and return materials to shelves and the circulation workroom.

The regular weekday schedule is Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Weekend shifts rotate and may occur every weekend or every other weekend, depending on the rotation. Saturday shifts are either 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sunday shifts are 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The position requires organizing materials, maintaining the library’s materials and facility, and assisting with library programs and displays. The work is generally performed in a standard, usually quiet library environment.

Requirements

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Ability to work day, evening, and weekend shifts.
• Ability to alphabetize items and place them in numerical order quickly and accurately.
• Ability to work independently and understand and follow verbal or written instructions.
• Proficiency with computers and computer applications.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
• Ability to bend and stoop, push carts weighing up to 300 pounds on a regular basis, and stand continuously.

Nice To Haves

• Prior library shelving experience.
• Familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System.

Responsibilities

• Identify and prioritize workroom needs.
• Organize library materials alphabetically and numerically.
• Return materials to their proper locations within the library.
• Unload library bins and carts.
• Empty the book drop.
• Set up tables and chairs for meetings.
• Assist with library programs and displays.
• Assist with the general upkeep of library materials and the facility.
• Refer non-directional questions to appropriate staff members.
